AEconomic DevelopmentSTORY

Joy Birungi is community development exponent that went through the metamorphic community development program in 2020. Joy always had a passion for her community and had endeavoured to bring value to them through business practices and other initiatives but was at times frustrated with results that didn’t match her expectations.

So, Joy decided to get some much-needed training and so pursued an opportunity to be trained at the metamorphic training centre in Kampala. During her time there she lent in and absorbed as much as she possibly could and had a total mindset shift as she went from doing things for her community to empowering her community to rise above poverty and be transformed.

Instead of returning to her community with a list of improvements that she could lead, she sat down and listened to community leaders, business owners, families, and individuals. As a result of this new-found approach Joy was able to build significant trust with the whole community and attracted great buy-in from all involved in the new transformation of the community.

Joy began teaching people basic budgeting and this had an immediate impact as people began to understand how money works and the need to save and put capital into business growth. Already businesses are seeing the effect of this training and are beginning to flourish and grow.

As part her training at metamorphic, Joy went to a farm where she learnt about initiating mixed farming as a way of better utilising space and diversifying the business. Upon returning to her community Joy put together a plan and began the transition to mixed farming with incredible results. Joy is not only enjoying the benefits of this new initiative with her family but has become a community recourse and is now helping many others to re-structure their businesses also.

As a result, the whole community is more productive, people are prospering and there is a measurable transformation taking place.

Joy is what we call a ‘Metamorph’, a transformer that rises above change. Joy is being the difference to many and has a bright future as she goes from strength to strength.

In Joy’s words, “I am now able to develop my community and be of value!”

  1. Gifts to approved Metamorphic Projects over $2 are tax deductible.

  2. No non-development activities are undertaken using tax-deductible gifts.

  3. Our projects are typically designed in such a way that the activities can be implemented incrementally, regardless of whether a fundraising target is met or exceeded (e.g. if a project includes 3 wells but only enough funds are raised for 2 wells, then only 2 wells will be completed). In the case where excess funds are received they may be applied to other similar projects (e.g. any funds in excess of what is required for 3 wells but may be applied to a school latrine project in a different region).

  4. All donations (gifts) and contributions to Metamorphic are made unconditionally however we note your preferred beneficiary as indicated by your allocation. The project manager may alter the allocation in the best interest of project outcomes (e.g. if a different solution will help more people, that option will be chosen).
